The Big Night

It is a great honour for every person who was involved in a movie nominated for the Best Picture award. Carefully selected, best of the best, once again we have 8 movies fighting to leave a mark in the history of cinema. In a year where the Coronavirus pandemic changed our lifestyle, the cinema industry was highly disturbed. Pre-production meetings were mainly online through the Zoom platform and shooting was almost impossible. But cinema finds a way once again to show the world that telling a good story can inspire and give hope.

Life Changing Experience

After watching all the nominated movies I find one thing connecting them. Some of them are political, some of them are for people with disabilities or inspired by true stories. They all portray the good in humanity. Goodness can win if we choose to see it. In a time where being good and acting well it is not what it used to be, those movies are so important for our progress like a human nation. They are a life-changing experience, that will make you cry and sometimes laugh, but most importantly showing to the audience that having a good heart is what makes us humans.

The Most Real Storytelling In the Recent Years

I’m not going to lie they all touched my soul in a very special way. I do not remember when I cried like a baby 8 times in a row. So, I’m going to give you the list of the nominated movies and speak a little bit for each one of them.

  • Minari
  • The Father
  • Sound of Metal
  • Mank
  • Promising Young Woman
  • Judas and the Black Messiah
  • The trial of the Chicago 7
  • Nomadland

Minari

Produced by the independent movie company A24, Minari is a movie that will leave you in complete silence. Written and directed by Lee Isaac Chung, in which categories he is also nominated, he is telling us a story about a Korean family moving from California to Arkansas and starting their own farm. The synergy between English and Korean languages is beautifully done. All the family members represent that supporting, respecting, and believing are the motors of the bright future.

The Father

It is the Florian Zeller director’s debut. Premiered on Sundance earlier this year, it’s a story about an old man and his mind disturbed by dementia. Anthony Hopkins is in the main lead and as always, he is delivering a ground-breaking performance which is nominated for best actor in the leading role. Filmed mostly in the interior, the movie leaves a deep mark on a very sensitive topic and make us realized that our family should be our main priority.

Sound of Metal

Produces by the Amazon Studio it is their best film to date. In his director’s debut, Darius Marder delivers a movie about a drummer, who starts to lose his hearing and how his life changes forever. Riz Ahmed writes history as he is the first Arabic to ever be nominated for the best actor award. Movies have the best sound editing since Whiplash which won in the same category. It is a movie that will leave you in silence long time after you are done watching. For all the people, who cannot leave without music it is a must-watch!

Mank

David Fincher is doing a fantastic job, portraying the scandalous writer Herman Mankiewicz, who has written the classic movie Citizen Kane. Gary Oldman in the main role, in a movie that is nominated in almost every single category. The cinematography is done so beautifully in black & white. What I love the most about this thrilling story is that it represents the good heart behind the Mank character. The scene with the L.B Mayer speech, the jokes about the different studios, and the scene where they talk about pictures that talk are the future are saying enough of what the movie industry was in the past. This movie is for all the fans of old classics and black & movies.

Promising Young Woman

I trust in what Focus Features is involved. Every time they hit 10/10. Written & directed by actress Emerald Fennell it is the only comedy in the category of the best picture. It is a story about a young woman, who has her own vision of justice. It represents how trauma from the past can change how you live, your actions, and your thoughts. One of the best original screenplays in recent years. My favourite scene is when they are dancing in the pharmacy. The real emotion between them makes you forget what the movie is about. For all the fans of dark comedies with an interesting plot twist, it will be highly appreciated.

Judas and the Black Messiah

Inspire by a true event, directed by Shaka King is doing a brilliant job representing a hard memory from the USA history. The battle against the system. The Black Panthers Party against the police. In the main role also nominated for best actor for a second time, Daniel Kaluuya is Fred Hampton – the leader of the Panthers. What amazed me the most is the good hearth and his real intention for all the Afro-Americans in the States and that justice should be for everyone.

The Trial of the Chicago 7

Netflix production, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin. The story about a trial against 7 people, all leaders all against the democrats and the war. It is having a very sensitive political topic. The movie offers the audience an answer to the question of what really happened back then in Chicago and who start the Riots. Very good work of mixing the real footage from the past and the trial itself.

Nomadland

There is a reason that I left this movie for the end of that article. It is a breath-taking story about a woman who chooses to live like a Nomad and her journey. Produces by Searchlight pictures, based on the book by Jessica Bruder, the director, screenwriter, and editor Chloe Zhao is nominated in all those Oscar categories. The shots of the desserts are incredible. The music is extraordinary. In the movie, the two times awarded for best actress in the leading roles Frances McDormand is houseless, not homeless, lost everything and we can see the sadness written on her face. But she never losses her hope. It is a story that reminds us that we just die with our memories and nothing else.
